Employment scams are a form of fraud where scammers target job seekers by claiming to be recruiters representing a company like Bandcamp. These scammers use increasingly sophisticated fake websites, advertisements, and emails to impersonate the legitimate company and make phony job offers.
These scammers will offer employment, often without any substantial interview, and promise good pay for a small amount of hourly work from home. Once you reply, the scammer may move the conversation to a platform like WhatsApp or Telegram, and they may send you to a detailed fake Bandcamp site.
During the course of your fraudulent “employment,” these scammers will ask for deposits – often in cryptocurrency – in order to receive payment for the work. While the scammers may send an initial small payment to build trust, you will not receive the money you have earned from your tasks and they will continue to deceive you into sending as much money as possible before you stop.
Tips for recognizing an employment scam
- Check the address. Bandcamp employees will only correspond via email from a bandcamp.com or songtradr.com address. While recruiters may occasionally make initial contact through LinkedIn, we will not discuss job offers via text message, WhatsApp, Telegram, or any other messaging apps.
- Check job boards and company listings. Open positions at Bandcamp will be posted here or here.
- Take time to research and ask questions. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Bandcamp will not make an offer of employment without going through an interview process.
- Read carefully. Look for poor grammar, spelling mistakes, or other unprofessional communication.
- Don’t pay for employment. Bandcamp will never ask for a deposit or any other monetary payment as part of the pre-employment process or during the course of your employment at the company.
